The mission of the Safari Samaritan is to facilitate the purchase and donation of solar powered lamps to school children in rural communities in Africa where many homes do not have electricity. These lamps improve the daily lives of children and adults by providing clean and healthy lighting, which replace dangerous, expensive, and polluting kerosene lamps, with lamps powered by the sun. This enables children to study at night and adults to extend their workday, all the while eliminating carbon emissions, improving household health, and increasing a family’s standard of living.
Safari Samaritan is an outgrowth of Safaris Made Simple (SMS), which was started by Mira Prostick in 1998 as a home based Internet travel service specializing in African Safaris. Mira has over 30 years experience as a travel agent and has made numerous trips to Africa.
In 2012 Mira saw the needs that existed in many African communities and how something as simple as a solar powered lamp could literally change the lives of an entire community of people that lived without electricity. She began working with d.light, a manufacturer of solar powered lamps, and leveraging the relationships she had built with African tour operators to bring these lamps to needy African communities by way of her traveling clients. Needless to say, her African counterparts were excited about the idea. She also found that her clients were very excited to have the opportunity to make such a difference as part of their African Safari vacation.
In July of 2013 Mira traveled again to Nairobi, Kenya with her family to meet with her tour operators, hotel partners, and others people instrumental in the delivery of charitable gifts to African communities. She also, along with her family and a few friends, delivered solar powered lamps and other gifts to a school in the Maasi Mara, as well as a Safe House for girls at risk. The process went flawlessly. But more than that, seeing how the lamps would impact the lives of the children was the highlight of the trip. (See the short video on the right.)
The combination of over 30 years experience in the travel industry, the long-standing relationship we have with prominent African tour operators, and our first-hand experience of personally delivering solar powered lamps and other items to multiple locations in Kenya puts us in the unique position of being able to seamlessly integrate your charitable giving in with your African Safari vacation. And of course, our Travel Partners will also customize the perfect African Safari vacation for you based upon your interests and budget.
